Seminar on emerging challenges in information security

Emerging threats, new vulnerabilities, rapidly evolving unconventional exploit paths are some of the key reasons why the information security canvass is undergoing significant change. These changes warrant a re-look at the technological and conceptual foundations of our response to security challenges.

Bahwan IT, who have been pioneering the provision and implementation of information security solutions to customers across the Sultanate of Oman, in association with Valiant Technologies, are pleased to present a half-day program looking at the two of the emerging areas that will interest owners and protectors of information assets.

An emerging area of challenge is the establishment of a common framework for assessing risks associated with information assets. Current scenario is replete with a large number of approaches – qualitative, quantitative and hybrid and each of them is arguably the best and each of them is also plagued by subjectivity found in the evaluation processes. A long felt need for a common framework for risk management process including risk assessment and mitigation is likely to be filled in, to a large extent, by the proposed ISO-31000. The first of the two sessions will present an overview of the proposed ISO-31000 and a road map for enterprise information risk assessment to be done using a structured approach conforming to ISO-31000.

Mr. A.R. Ragahvan, COO of Valiant Technologies will speak on information risk management in the context of the proposed ISO-31000 framework. Raghavan has been in the Information security business for over 18 years and had worked with large service providers and global names in security consulting before joining Valiant Technologies.

Another area that is warranting attention of information security professionals is the inadequacy of today’s information networks to handle digital forensics trail after an infraction has occurred in the network. The infraction could just be a compromise of some portion of network defense mechanism or could show signs of a full scale cyber crime. With aggregate value of ill-gotten wealth from cyber crime clearly surpassing illegal money made by traditional crimes related to drug and alcohol, the need to implement a comprehensive digital forensics mechanism is gaining importance. The second presentation will look the basics of digital forensics and the process of establishing a comprehensive forensic capability in enterprise information networks.

Dr. Rama Subramaniam, CEO of Valiant Technologies will speak on digital forensics and related security issues. He has over 25 years of work experience in information systems controls and security. He worked with large manufacturing, consulting and service delivery corporations in Asia and Africa before joining Valiant Technologies.
